The site is popular for the local visitors as well as foreigners because many species of wildlife are collected and it is the only official wildlife rescue in Cambodia. This wonderful wildlife sanctuary for rescued animals is home to gibbons, sun bears, elephants, tigers, lions, deer, ginormous pythons and a massive bird enclosure. They were all taken from poachers or abusive owners and receive care and shelter here as part of a sustainable breeding program. All the birds, mammals and reptiles at PTWRC bear their own stories. Some came from abusive backgrounds, some captured illegally and sold for trade, and some were given by locals who could no longer care for their pet. Travel Indochina Cambodia

The Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center is home to over 12,000 animals and 102 species including 93 endangered or threatened species and is the biggest rescue center in Cambodia. Almost all the animals in this park are rescued somehow and are being taken good care of by the Wildlife Alliance. At Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center (PTWRC), Wildlife Alliance aids in the recovery and rehabilitation of animals rescued from the wildlife trade. The animals that are saved by the Wildlife Rapid Rescue Team (WRRT) are relocated to the center and each individual is assessed for release based on their health and strength to survive independently. One of the best features of the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center is that it is able to give the animals large natural preserves on which to roam around. Even better, those that are healthy and suited for return to the wild are released into appropriate habitat in protected forest and other areas. The others receive a home at Phnom Tamao for as long as needed.

The center sits on 2,500 hectares of protected forest, which is a rarity in Cambodia. This forest provides a perfect natural refuge for rescued Cambodian wildlife. Phnom Tamao Wildlife Sanctuary is really worth to pay a visit when you have chance to visit Phnom Penh.
