It is basically South East Asia twenty years ago may be the answer when you ask anyone when who have ever traveled to Cambodia. The tourism in Cambodia is just starting to bloom, rather than consuming everything in its path like the zombie apocalypse’s commotion map. That is the reason why you can see smiling Khmer people actually doing their daily activities, not desperately trying to sell you fake Rolexes when visiting places like Kampong Thom and Chambok as well as why café and bar scene in Siem Reap still bring you fresh and welcoming feeling, not oppressive and overloaded with tourists. Friendly, cheap, relatively quiet, Cambodia which is the best of South East Asia, is suitable for a Cambo adventure challenge. Indochina tours Cambodia
Local people
Although it is common for not all of countries but most of which to claim that their locals are the most hospitable on the planet, Cambodia should have a genuine stroke at the title. It is the local people that stick in the mind for anyone who has done a Cambodia challenge. It is even more noticeable given the tragic history of this country, particularly the period under the Khmer Rouge regime in the 70s. Cambodians are always looking to the future, to tomorrow in spite of the horrible fears in the past. Thanks to a fundamental monarchy together with a big income of new tourism dollars) the future seems to be pretty bright. Tours in Cambodia
The food scene
Cambodian food, like that of most of South East Asia, is cheap and spicy in the same measure. You can find it easy to eat well for USD$10 per day. Although there are literally hundreds of varieties of Khmer dishes ranging from fragrant malis to sticky desert rice served with coconut milk, mangoes, durian, rice is the common staple with every dish. Freshwater fish play an essential part in the cuisine since the Mekong cuts through the center of Cambodia. Everything from the street stalls in Siem Reap or Battambang is worth trying to sample a bit of, but do not forget to save room for Kdam chaa fried crab with Kampot peppers and garlic chives as well as fish amok, Khmer curry with a crusty baguette. And a challenging Cambodia adventure works up with an appetite of the creepy crawlies such as: grasshoppers, spiders, beetles etc.
The history
It is your responsibility, as decent people and global citizens, to at least know well of the history of wherever you go. But if you are in Cambodia, you have to do even more. When landing in Phnom Penh, do not forget to spend some time checking out not only the trendy coffee shops on Street 307 or 58, as well as the incredible Shwedagon Pagoda at night, but also take time of a full day to discover the Choeung Ek Killing Fields, which is located about 10 miles south of the city. To learn more about the Khmer Rouge and the genocide of the mid-late 70s, there is no better way than going to Cambodia and see it for yourself.
