You can go on your own if you are more adventurous or are travelling in a small group. From Phnom Penh to the border at Ha Tien, you can catch a taxi for $35 to $50. Taking a bus to Kampot for $6 or $7 is the cheaper alternative. In Kampot, you can catch a motor to the border for $7 or $8 or one of many minivans leaving from the Boddhi Tree Guesthouse that go to the Vietnam border.

Upon arrival at the border, if you have already got a motor at this point, your driver might walk you through and then drive you some more kilometers to the ferry. Otherwise, on the Cambodia side, you can pick up a motor driver to take you through the border, or just hoof it. Be warned, even though it is a bit of a walk through the border area, there are plenty of casinos to distract the intrepid travelers.
