- Tonle Sap Lake
The Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. In the dry season, the lake drains into the Tonle Sap Lake which flows into the Mekong River. But in the rainy season (June to October), the large amount of water in the Mekong causes the Tonle Sap Lake to reverse its flow.
The Lake is also a vital commercial resource, providing more than half of the fish consumed in Cambodia. In harmony with the typical ecosystems, the human occupations at the edges of the lake is similarly distinctive – floating villages, towering stilted houses, huge fish traps, and an economy and way of life deeply intertwined with the lake, the fish, the wildlife and the cycles of up and down waters
- Banteay Srei
Located in a remote area the temple was rediscovered in 1914 and cleared some 10 years later. It was rebuilt using the method of anastomosis by French conservator Henri Marchal during the 1930’s.
Banteay Srei is considered by many to be the jewel in the crown of Angkor art. A Hindu temple worshiped to Shiva, it is cut from stone of a pinkish hue and contains some of the finest stone carving. It is one of the smallest place at Angkor, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in stature. It is wonderfully well maintained and many of its carvings are three-dimensional.
Today the Banteay Srei is a very well maintained monument. Its exquisite ornamentations that wrapped most of the temple show great skill and precision.
